While you’re waiting for your bundle of joy to make his or her first appearance in the world, you should also expect a great deal of biological transformations. Morning sickness is one of those responses that emerges early on in a pregnancy. While it tends to go away with time, it doesn’t hurt to get familiar with a couple of home remedies for morning sickness.


What is Morning Sickness?

Morning sickness is the nausea and vomiting that some women undergo when they become pregnant. During the first few months of pregnancy, nearly 80% of women will experience morning sickness as a result to the sudden rush of hormones associated with creating a child [1]. Despite it’s name, the condition can occur at any time of the day or night.

Causes and Symptoms

The cause of morning sickness is connected to the changes in levels of two hormones: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen. These two hormones are generated by the placenta and fetus. One of the things that can occur during pregnancy is a slowing down of stomach processes. As a result, you become nauseous. Women are more susceptible to morning sickness if they are:

  • Carrying their first child
  • Young
  • Pregnant with multiple fetuses

The symptoms of morning sickness will vary with each woman, who oftentimes experience both nausea and vomiting. Other signs of pregnancy accompany morning sickness, such as backaches, constipation, exhaustion, frequent urination, headaches, and lower stomach cramps.

Morning Sickness Home Remedies

Morning sickness is one of the most dreaded occurrences for a pregnant woman, which is why getting familiar with the following home remedies could become just the relief you crave when symptoms start to arise:

a) Raw Almonds:

When you’re too sick to eat a small meal, snack on raw almonds to gain an adequate amount of fat, protein, and vitamin B, which can help keep nausea away.

b) German Chamomile:

Prepare an infusion of German chamomile in a covered container. Throughout the day, sip small amounts, but do not exceed five cups per day [2].

c) Lemon:

You can ease your morning sickness by breathing in the scent of a fresh lemon peel.

d) Ginger Ale:

Settle a bout of morning sickness with a cup of ginger ale.

e) Plug Your Nose:

If you are prone to feeling nauseous, it’s best to avoid breathing in deeply when you’re around scents that pose as known triggers. For instance, some women feel sick to their stomach when they catch a whiff of burnt toast first thing in the morning.

f) Avoid Sudden Movements:

When getting out of bed, move slowly, as sudden movements can bring on a bout of morning sickness.

g) Walk:

Some people can calm down their morning sickness symptoms by going for a simple walk or participating in low-intensity exercise.

h) Mint and Lime:

Combine one teaspoon of fresh lime juice and mint with one tablespoon of honey. Drink this concoction three times per day.

i) Ginger [3] :

Ginger has a reputation for combating morning sickness. From ginger tea to ginger candy, there are a variety of approaches to consider. To make ginger tea, boil the root in water, strain, and then serve with honey.

j) Bland Foods:

When you start to feel nauseous, eat bland foods, like saltine crackers, Jell-O, Popsicles, chicken broth, ginger ale, and pretzels.

k) Soda Crackers:

For middle-of-the-night and early morning relief, keep soda crackers by your bed so that you can raise your blood sugar levels and combat an empty stomach.

l) Clear Fluids:

On a frequent basis, drink clear liquids (like broth, water, fruit juice, and some herbal teas) to settle your stomach. Gatorade is a decent selection because it replaces lost electrolytes.

m) High-Protein Snack:

Before going to bed, make sure to eat a snack packed with protein.
