Home Remedies for Heart Burn

home remedies for heart burn

“I would like to find a stew that will give me heartburn immediately, instead of at three o’clock in the morning.”
John Barrymore

Heartburn is a painful burning sensation felt in the chest due to the reflux of acid. Some heartburn is caused by indigestion while some stems from the more serious gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you get heartburn several times a week it is important that you schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible, you may be suffering from GERD [1].

There are many different factors that can contribute to heartburn such as:

Hiatal hernia
Aspirin or Ibuprophen
Spicy foods
Citrus fruits

How many people suffer from heartburn?

Symptoms of Heartburn

Heartburn does not affect everyone in the same way. Here are some of the common symptoms of heartburn:

List of Home Remedies for Heartburn

A good diet is a powerful way for you to cure heartburn at home. A diet rich in vegetables and fiber is a great start.

Here are some foods that can be added to your diet as home remedies to help stop heartburn, sometimes even before it starts:

a. Apple Cider Vinegar:

This is a good way to deal with heartburn, as natural apple cider vinegar promotes healthy digestion. It will also clear the body of toxins at the same time. There are several ways in which you can introduce this to your diet, for example, you have a choice between tablets, capsules or liquid. If you choose liquid you may want to mix it with some water and honey to smooth out the taste.

b. Peppermint oil or tea:

Menthol is the main ingredient in peppermint and it soothes the stomach. By relaxing the muscles of the stomach and the esophagus peppermint leads to less muscle cramping. Oftentimes this cramping is what leads to acid being pushed up into the esophagus. By eliminating this, you then eliminate heartburn. Peppermint also eases gas and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Chewing peppermint leaves is another great tasting way to deal with heartburn.

c. Ginger:

Fresh ginger not only tastes delicious but it is one of the oldest home remedies for heartburn. Ginger reduces inflammation associated with heart burn as well as treats nausea. You can add ginger to your food as you cook it or you can eat it raw. There are also ginger teas and tablets at your local health food store. The average adult should take 500mg of ginger to stop heartburn in its tracks.

d. Fennel tea:

Fennel tea is another popular home remedy for heartburn. To make your own fennel tea all you have to do is boil a couple of fennel seeds in water. To add to the healing properties and the taste of this tea, simply add some drops of peppermint oil.

e. Baking soda and water:

This is a tried and true method of treating heartburn. It may not sound appetizing and let’s face it, it tastes terrible, but it will get rid of your heartburn instantly. Add approximately 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water and drink it quickly. If you are on a salt restricted diet you should avoid this home remedy for heartburn as baking soda contains sodium.

f. Healthy anti heartburn fruits:

There are several great tasting fruits that can help to curb occasional heartburn. Fruits such as bananas, papayas and rhubarb have been shown to have a dramatic effect on heart burn. Papaya can be eaten fresh or you can choose to purchase tablets at a health food store. As for rhubarb, these stalks and leaves can be eaten raw. They calm the stomach and neutralize the acid that causes heartburn and acid reflux.

g. Chamomile:

It is not an old wives tale that Chamomile tea soothes heartburn. Chamomile is rich in calcium and it will lower the stomach acids that are causing your heartburn symptoms.

Natural remedies like these are a great way for you to deal with occasional heartburn. Keep in mind that it’s important you meet with your doctor to discuss the dosages that are appropriate for you, as well as see if your heartburn is a symptom of a more serious condition.

I take a table spoon of apple cider vinegar and it works like charm every time. It’s not very tasty in your month, and burns going down, but helps relief my heartburn 100% of the time.

I have read that others suggest just vinegar, but that has never worked for me and taste really, really bad. Tried chamomile remedy, and worked, but not as well as apple cider vinegar.

Well, I experienced heart burn for the first time over the Christmas break. I’m in my 20’s,and I have NEVER previously
had to deal with heart burn before.

However, I noticed that this problem didn’t start until I started or added something to my diet that I don’t usually consume. This something was cranberry juice. I notice that my esophagus would ” squeeze” every time after I had drank cranberry juice, and every time after I drank something hot. I”m a heavy tea drinker, and the night that I first started experiencing this, I couldn’t even drink a whole cup of tea, because every swallow of this “hot ” tea , would cause my esophagus to squeeze .

So I took some apple cider vinegar first. I think it worked but it felt worse at first. Secondly , I prayed to God about it. Thirdly I drank some Milk. Which went down smoothly and caused no reaction. The next morning I was pretty normal, but I still have to be cautious of what I consume, especially acidic foods and beverages. I do think that the milk helped a lot, so you might want to try it as a remedy.

For starters, I have GERD and Barrett’s Disease. I had heartburn so severe I was about in tears, it was hurting me so badly. It is 11:00 p.m. and here where I live you wont jump up and just go to the store, nothing open. I was out of my prescription for my GERD, so I read your tips…I tried the baking soda, made me vomit (omg taste just like that crap you have to drink for an endoscopy/upper GI), Second I tried the ice, it stopped the burning in my throat, but, I could still feel it bubbling in my stomache, so then i moved onto the cucumber, honestly, it was soothing my throat and I could actually feel it soothing all the way down to my stomache… so maybe just maybe this will work and I can sleep tonight…Thanks for all your tips…except the Baking soda, man i will never try that again…But, I am sure it has helped many cause My mom use to do it when I was little….thanks again….

I am fighting an episode of heartburn and reflux right now. I tried Pepto. It seemed to help for a few minutes. Then the heartburn came back. I tried eating a bit of bread to try to soak up the acid. That didn’t seem to help. Finally I brewed a cup of chamomile tea and am drinking that now. It seems to be soothing my problem. Hoping to go to bed soon.

Don’t wear tight clothing around the abs. Though you may like to show off your six pack;-), tight clothing puts more pressure on the stomach and can cause more acid to reflux into the esophagus.

  • siree

six months back i was suffering with Acid reflux so badly. At that time i was roaming hospitals like anything bcoz it was hurting me so badly. Finally i have used homeopathic medicine it was very good now im not getting that much but some times only means when i will eat masala food or spicy food. So we should try to reduce spicy foods.
as of my knowledge cold milk taking in the morning is very good remedy for acid reflux.it works very well.

  • deltadawn758

I have GERD and Barrett’s esophagus and I have tried a lot of stuff. Am on here because I was just suffering from burning in the throat, ears and chest…bread and eggnog didn’t work, antacids and Gaviscon didn’t work, tried yogurt and milk and they didn’t work either…didn’t have anything else like bananas or apple cider vinegar nor even baking soda in the house…but I will tell you two things that do work…tagament HD or generic version and cough medicine. Works wonders. Acid reflux will also cause congestion. Take Muscinex…took Muscinex D when I took the tagament HD 200 pills (yes, mine was so severe I had to take two) and after about 20-30 mins the burning (which is so severe it brings me to tears and has me begging God to deliver me) eases and dissipates. NOW, I will chance going back to bed and sleeping in a 90 degree angle…because laying elevated doesn’t help me…have to be sitting upright. I also might add that out of the three acid reducers, cimetidine, rantadine and famotadine (please forgive spelling) only cimetidine or Tagament HD 200 will work for me. The other two is like popping candy. As for proton pump inhibitors, which are different than acid reducers, willnot help the burning.I take Prilosec OTC religiously and didn’t miss a dose and still ended up with the burning (woke me up at 2 am). Nexium quit working for me. Protonix quit working for me. Previcid stopped working for me. Eventually, Prilosec OTC will stop working as well. Anyway, hope my experiences help someone like I needed help earlier when awaken at 2 am!

  • frank

I took protonix and at first it helped but after two weeks I started getting soreness in the solar plexus area. Turns out I was deficient in enzymes. I take probiotics, and enzymes now and feel better. You might want to try slippery elm, dgl, aloe Vera to sooth and help repair. Eat an apple after eating and no more ppi’s people.

  • curlysue

Just tried the apple cider vinigar……took away the burning in my throat, but still a weird pressure in my chest. Will continue using the apple cider vinagar to see how if it keeps working…..

I have had the worst heartburn for about 3 days. I just tried the baking soda. It seems to be working. And the taste really isn’t that bad. I did half a tsp in 6oz of room temp water. I may try another half in a little while.
