Eating wheat, white flour, meat, eggs, potatoes, beans, rice, grains, fish, and peanuts can also lead to excessive mucus production, nasal drip, and a clogged throat.
• Your environment can cause nasal mucus to thicken, especially when the air is cool and dry during the winter season. Stagnant mucus can lead to unwanted bacteria and sickness.
• Your lifestyle can affect mucus production. For example, smoking tobacco can irritate mucus membranes and cause inflammation. Increased mucus production then occurs. Alcohol and caffeine can dry up the mucus – making it harder to remove from the throat.
Excessive mucus is often associated with symptoms, such as runny noses, hay fever, watery nasal discharge, nasal congestion, stuffy nose, scratchy throat, throat irritation, sneezing, discolored phlegm, and eye discharge.
Excessive Mucus Home Remedies
Sniffling and coughing are common symptoms of a cold, flu and other pesky conditions. Add in excessive mucus and the length of time you suffer symptoms can become prolonged. When you’re looking to breathe, swallow and live easier, consider the following home remedies for mucus:
People have been using ginger to loosen and break up congestion for hundreds of years. Chew ¼ to ½ slice of ginger root. Some people have made a healing poultice out of fresh, grated or powdered ginger that has been steeped in hot water. The ginger is then made into a paste. Add two drops of thyme or eucalyptus essential oil, and apply to the chest.
b) Ginger Tea:
To use the antihistamine properties of ginger, prepare a tea using fresh ginger root. Pour one cup of boiling water over ½ teaspoon of ginger root. Drink after adding lemon juice and honey. This home remedy is effective for treating bronchitis, colds, and sinusitis. Ginger has a knack for drying out excessive mucus secretions and stimulating removal.
c) Ginger Bath:
Some people have poured several cups of ginger tea to their bath water for a soak that gets results. You may also add ¼ cup of powdered ginger to your bathtub.
d) Flush with Fluids:
Remove mucus and toxins from the body faster by consuming fruit juices, herbal teas, and broths. To thin out mucus, drink warm liquids. Opt for healing remedies, such as chicken or vegetable soup. Add herbs and spices (like ginger or parsley), which can help ease inflammation in the throat and prevent the thickening of mucus.

Eliminate mucus by adding two tablespoons of honey to an equal amount of grape juice. Drink this home remedy three times per day for five days. The grape juice possesses expectorant properties.
i) Hot Water with Lemon:
Add the juice of half a fresh lemon and one spoonful of honey to a glass of hot water. Drink to soothe a cough plagued by mucus.
j) Onion and Lemon:
Combine the juice of one onion and one lemon to one cup of boiling water. Add raw honey to give the mixture a bit of taste. Before drinking, allow the liquid to reach room temperature. The honey also possesses healing properties. Consume this remedy three times per day and repeat for two to three days.
Add a handful of mint leaves to a large pot of water placed over high heat. Once the water reaches its boiling point, remove from the stove. Lean over the liquid with a towel draped over your head. Inhale the vapors to open up your sinuses and dry up mucus secretions. To enhance the results of this home remedy, add a handful of eucalyptus leaves along with the mint.
