Home Remedies for Clogged Drains

In the kitchen and bathroom, a pool of water can form at any moment when drains become clogged. This can make washing the dishes and taking showers a real hassle. Sometimes, the problem is serious enough to call a plumber, but for small or manageable obstructions, home remedies for clogged drains can help.

Causes for Clogged Drains

Depending on the drain, the root of your clog comes from hair, oil, heavy paper, food, and/or mineral build-up associated with hard water. In the kitchen, a combination of food and grease (or fat) clogs a sink. Bathroom sinks, bathtubs and showers clog from hair, soap, and fibers from washcloths. Interestingly, hair is not as much an enemy of your drains as you think. It is the oils, waxes and other sticky substances found in your bath and beauty products that makes it easier for hair to stick to and accumulate in drains [1].

Clogged Drain Home Remedies

When possible, it’s in your best interest to avoid the costs of a professional plumber. Before making that dreaded phone call, try considering the following home remedies for clogged drains:

a) Tweezers:

A pair of tweezers with a dull edge can be used to extract hair from a clogged drain. Before pulling out visible hair, use a screwdriver to remove the bathtub drain.

b) Sharp Facial Scissors:

To remove large, stubborn clumps of hair, a pair of sharp facial scissors with a slight curve is flexible enough to maneuver inside of a clogged drain.

c) Hot Water:

In the kitchen, run hot water to warm your pipes before washing your dishes. This will help prevent grease in your dishwater from sticking to your pipes and causing a clog. Hot water can also loosen up and remove a buildup of grease in the drain.

d) Hot Salt Water:

Add salt to a boiling pot of water and pour down your drain to remove grease.

e) Plunger:

Toilets aren’t the only part of the home that can benefit from a plunger. Use a plunger that you designate for sinks in your home to unclog drains. Don’t forget to clearly mark your plungers so that you do not accidentally spread bacteria by using the wrong one.

f) Baking Soda and Salt:

Combine equal parts of salt and baking soda. Put the mixture into a clogged drain and then pour boiling water. Leave overnight and in the morning, flush the drain with hot water.

g) Baking Soda and Vinegar:

To treat a small clog, place ½ cup of baking soda into your clogged drain. Follow up by pouring ½ cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a glass and leave overnight. The next morning, pour hot water down the drain. The baking soda and vinegar works together to dissolve fatty acids in the drain.

h) Metal Hanger:

After removing the drain cover, use a flashlight to identify blockage in your drain. Use a straightened metal hanger to pull out anything clogging the drain – perfect for removing hair. Afterwards, flush the drain with hot water.

i) Metal Tooth Pick:

The small, curved shape of a metal toothpick can remove hair and other materials trapped inside of a clogged drain.

j) Washing Soda:

If you use washing soda for your laundry, take advantage of this highly alkaline chemical substance to unclog a drain. Add one pound of washing soda to three gallons of boiling water. Mix thoroughly and pour the solution down the drain and leave overnight. This home remedy will dissolve the buildup of hair and grease without harming the pipes. Please note that washing soda is not the same thing as powdered soap detergent or baking soda.

k) Dawn Dishwashing Liquid:

For drains clogged with grease, prepare a mixture consisting of dishwashing liquid known to cut grease and boiling hot water. Slowly pour down the drain.
